Imaging SSD first timer
-
@theopenem_admin I did as instructed. No change in the speed of the connection.
-
@dannyneunan Is your target machine fully updated BIOS / SSD firmware wise? I have seen issues with SSD's in the past speed with outdated firmware cause issues like that speed wise.
ill be imaging a few dozen SSD machines later next month, will see what happens..
I dont remember having issues when i cloned SSD machines on clone deploy... so it might be that firmware.
-
@mtywe I appreciate the help. Yes it is completely up to date. It is a brand new out of the box (with the latest updates) Dell Optiplex 3080. I double checked after reading your suggestion just to make sure. Thanks.
-
Can you boot to the client console and run
uname -a
and post the output
-
@theopenem_admin Here you go. It wasn't much. I hope this is what you were looking for.
-
Yes, just wanted to verify the new kernel was definitely being loaded. I'm fairly certain I've imaged 3080's before without it issue, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Do you have a usb 3 nic you can try?
-
@theopenem_admin I do not have a usb 3 nic. Is there another setting in the bios I need to check? This is only a problem with this brand new Dell Optiplex 3080.
-
My only thoughts at the moment:
- I'll build a new kernel to see if this fixes the issue. 5.11.10 is the latest from kernel.org. It may take me a day or two for this.
- Try to find a usb nic to see if that works
- Try using the WIE
-
@theopenem_admin I am downloading and running through the WIE install as an option. I will keep you updated. I did on a whim update the firmware on my workbench switch with no improvement. I plugged directly into my server room switch with no improvement. I've tried everything I can. Next....I will look for a live chicken.
-
@theopenem_admin I followed your instructions on building the WIE. I had not problems or errors during the install. I did however get completely confused by the last section of the instructions. Can you please tell me where I can find the ISO files mentioned in this step?
-
I believe it's in the build directory of the winpe maker you downloaded, or output can't remember what it's called.
-
@theopenem_admin I found the ISO and used Rufus to load it to a USB drive. I get through all the prompts until I hit this snag.
I don't see any of my images available to me. Ugh.
-
The images built with the LIE and WIE are not interchangeable. You need to pull that image using the WIE. Just deploy that image to a machine using the LIE, immediately shut it down after the image deploys before it boots to windows, then upload it from the WIE.
-
@theopenem_admin The plot thickens.... I was able to get a hold of a usb nic. I took a screenshot.
Needless to say it is working normally. My next question is what do I do? This is a brand new Dell Optiplex. It has a standard Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller nic in it. That is pretty generic and usually the same thing in our older machines. Ideas?
-
It must be a newer realtek device with a different chipset. A newer kernel is the only thing that may help. I'll try and build a new one soon, till then you'll need to use the usb nic.
-
@theopenem_admin That will have to work for now. We are about to purchase several hundred of these for our school system. This one machine I have was the one we are testing with to see if there are any problems before we go further. Let me know as soon as you get something I can test. Thanks.
-
@theopenem_admin I got the image to take but now on a restart it can't find a bootable device. Do I need to undo anything in the bios related to the AHCI? Thanks
-
The new kernel is ready if you want to try it.
- Go to admin settings->Kernels
- Select download on the 5.11.10 kernel
- Rebuild your client iso with the new 5.11.10 kernel selected from the dropdown. It won't be selected by default.
-
@theopenem_admin I downloaded the new kernel created my usb bootable drive. I tried using the built in nic card and the speed was still painfully slow. I tried the usb nic and got the image to take. I restarted the machine and I now get a new error.
Is there something in the settings I need to change? -
Its not going to boot if Windows was installed with Raid and now it's set to AHCI. Windows needs to be installed while the hd is set to AHCI. There isn't anything else I can do for nic. It may be better to use the WIE for this model.
